Social Signals

Social Signals (image credit: grape5.com)

Do you already use social signals to improve your website?
How social signals can have impacts on your search rankings?

It is undeniable that we need social media in our lives. And you need social signals to improve your website.

Besides being used to build good relationships with your friends and your loved ones, social media is also a great place to increase your website’s authority as well.

Perhaps social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook or Google+ does not give a lot of sales in your business, but still, you have to take advantage of them.

As you know that the search engines (both Google and Bing) using social signals to determine how high your website’s rank.

If you can utilize them properly, your sites will increase as well as your business.

If you are venturing online long enough, you would realize that there are three basic factors to gain more trust and visibility online.

The three factors are the quality of content, age and authority.

And I believe that the most time-consuming and the most challenging is the process to increase your website authority. But indeed, it’s worth to be done.

One of the ways to increase the authority of your website is to get social signals from social media influencers.

What Are Social Signals?

As the name implies; Social signals are certain actions that you receive from any social media sites, especially Google+, Twitter and Facebook.

Certain actions in question can be in the form of likes, + 1s, shares, tweets and retweets, conversations and comments.

The more you receive social signals from social media influencers; the better is your popularity. That means your traffic and rankings will increase for sure.

In order to help you to better understand about this matter, I would make an interesting analogy associated with this.

Let’s say that your website as a new kid who went to a school that he never visited before. He did not know anyone, and of course, he does not have any friends (visitors and audiences) yet.

Social media influencers in this case represented by the popular kids. And they are the ones who will assist you in finding new friends for you.

Search engines are represented by the school itself and the whole in it, both students and faculties.

Although you have a lovely personality, an interesting past and there are many things that you can offer as a friend, but it’s all useless if no one know who you are.

That’s why you need someone to speak highly about you. The result will be more powerful if those who did that for you are the popular one. That way, people will start to know who you really are.

    Hey Nanda,

I definitely agree with Neil’s gifographic and I love it by the way. So cool and very different with the moving parts. Kind of fun actually.

That’s what I have also tried to make clear to people and why you need to start with building those relationships. Will we ever have a following like QuickSprout or Smashing Magazine? Maybe not but just think what can happen when you make those connections with the right people. All they have to do is share your content with their audience and you can have that major spike with your results too.

I was just speaking with someone about an hour ago about how I don’t concentrate on keywords anymore yet my content continues to be found on the search engines. When people are sharing it and talking about it, how can Google ignore that right?

Great share my friend and again, really fun gifographic. Definitely will make you think ya know.

    Hello, Nanda,

Yes, it most certainly is a great Gifographic. In fact, I had not heard of this term until now, so definitely learned something new, my friend. 🙂

Really cool way to share information, just love it!

Yep, it’s all about developing those relationships with folks, and getting traffic from multiple sources, and social media is a major source, that’s for sure.

Social signals are very important, that’s why I’m sure to place social media sharing buttons above and below my content, and also to respond to every person who shares my content on social media networks…and spend a limited amount of time on networks connecting with folks.

Questions, contests, votes and how to lists are much more likely to get shared, that’s true, I couldn’t agree more! 🙂

So, I agree with what Neil shared, and I appreciate you sharing this with us! I hadn’t seen it before. Thanks so much, and hope you’re having an awesome Wednesday.

    Hey Nanda,

You are totally right – we absolutely need social media in our lives! Be it our personal life or business life we need it and yes for business social signals are becoming a crucial factor that not only determine rankings, but also decide the power of a website, its trust factor and its readership base.

The Gifographic is wonderful and is packed with information.

When it comes to social sharing, timing is very important. Unlike a regular blog post, an update made on social media has a short life time. So it is crucial that we post them in the right time to get them in front of the right eyeballs.

Thanks for publishing this piece. Have a great weekend 🙂

What a great post Nanda! I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a Gifographic, I really like that.

The thing I really like about this graphic is the case studies you included. I really had no idea. Hey Nanda, thanks for posting Neil’s Gifographic, first time I’ve come across one of these animated infographics, but very informative.

I definitely agree an believe that social media is great for business. Perfect for helping bloggers connect with new relevant people in their niche, as well as to reinforce relationships and promote blog content.

Posting and sharing content on social networks is very time consuming, thankfully there are some great automation tools to help us schedule tweets, shares and social messages.

Engaging on social network sites however is not something you can automate thankfully, making an effort to post comments, interact with others and contribute to conversations is just as important.

Thanks for sharing this Nanda, learned a few things here.

I would agree with you. Social media signal is really important for increase high ranking of the search engine listing.

I found some bloggers told me that Google have deleted their social media algorithm, but I’m actually trust on those.

You know..? Now a day, our article was ranked because 2 important fact. PA and DA.

Domain and page authority are really important facts to tell search engine about the quality of our website. It mean that you we get a lot of backlink in order to gain authority.

Moreover, social media signal is really important to help to do so. If you have a lot of tweet, share, +1 from different ip address. Search engine will trust that a lot of people love our article and then pull it up. isn’t it.?

    Great stuff here.

Social signals and shares makes a huge difference because it helps get your content out there much more and possibly get different eyes on it. That why I think that more time needs to be spent on promoting posts as opposed to constantly creating content.

It’s really all about getting out there and promoting and outreach as well. Great post and gifographic.

  • Bonnie Gean says:

    Hi Nanda,

I like the idea of search engines giving me more juice because the social signals are high, but I would also think that ANYONE can give you a +1, but that doesn’t mean it’s warranted.

Friends help friends all the time. As you stated in your school analogy, the popular kids can help make you popular too. Why is this bad, online?

What if you’re the most horrible person in the world, but your friends still like you. They give you a “high five”, and it raises your social signals. Does this mean you’re no longer a bad person? Nope.

It just means your popular friends helped you gain the notoriety that you didn’t deserve. I see search engines possibly doing the same thing.

I would like to think that we could all gain the high signals simply by being a good person who helps others. I dislike the idea that it’s a competition for popularity. I don’t want people to like me more than someone else; I simply want to be accepted.

    RE: Social Sharing on Facebook

In any case, I did like your infographic! 🙂 I will test the theory of posting at 9am, 12pm, 3pm and 6pm to see if I notice any differences in shares and likes.

  • Hi, Nanda, you’ve taught me a new word!

I’ve seen animated infographics but I never knew this is what they were called. They’re definitely much more shareable. This one is particularly fun. And it’s perfect for the subject because it’s so shareable.

I really liked your analogy with starting at a new school. That sums it up perfectly. Those social signals show that there’s something here that people have enjoyed.

I always follow a set plan to promote posts on social media but it’s difficult to get consistent results. There’s a fine line between spending too much time on social media and being there enough to engage – it’s like you can’t win 🙂

    Thanks for a great post!
